Endometriosis Symptoms

Endometriosis symptoms are caused by endometrium tissue growing outside the uterus. The endometrium is the tissue lining the uterus (endometrium) and when this tissue grows in other areas of the body outside the uterus, it can cause symptoms known as endometriosis.

These growths swell and then break down and bleed just like the endometrium in the uterus during your period, but the blood cannot escape the body cavity and these "outer" growths of uterine tissue can cause pain and scarring resulting in infertility.

Some women may not have any obvious symptoms until they are diagnosed because they are having trouble getting pregnant. Others may have severe pain and one of the most common endometriosis symptoms is pelvic pain.

The pain often is in time to the menstrual cycle, but it is also possible to experience pain that doesn't correlate to this cycle. For some, symptoms (pain) are so severe that they interfere significantly with their daily life.

Estrogen is the hormone that triggers endometriosis growth. and this is why endometriosis only affects women during their fertile adult years. When menstrual periods stop at menopause, estrogen levels drop and endometriosis symptoms will likely also stop.

Following is a list of the most common endometriosis symptoms.

Pain - Where depends on where the growths are. Pain in your lower belly, rectum, vagina or lower back. Pain may be only before and during your periods or all the time. Some women have more pain during sex, bowel movement, or when their ovaries release an egg.

Abnormal bleeding - Heavy periods, bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, or blood in their urine/stool.

Trouble getting pregnant - Sometimes this is the only symptom women may have.

Pregnancy usually leads to a lessening in endometriosis symptoms, especially during the last six to seven months of pregnancy. However, some women may experience worsening of symptoms during the first two to three months.
