Kidney Stone Symptoms

Kidney stone symptoms and their causes can vary but most kidney stones have some things in common.

Kidney stone causes are due to the different salts and minerals that can collect in the kidneys and form stones. These stones can form when the water/mineral/salt balance of the urine is thrown out of kilter and sometimes the problem can be helped just by drinking more water.

Kidney stones can be barely visible small grains or in extreme cases, as large as golf balls. Passing the stones through the urinary tract is what causes the intense pain and small stones may not always cause pain.

The most common kidney stone symptoms are:

1. Severe pain which usually starts toward the side of the lower back and may radiate toward the groin.

2. Nausea and/or vomiting

3. Burning feeling

4. Frequent urge to urinate

5. Cloudy and/or foul smelling urine

6. Blood in the urine

7. Pus in the urine

8. Bloated feeling

9. Fever

10.Chills

You may not necessarily have all of these symptoms at once to have kidney stones.

Why You Get Kidney Stones

Kidney stone symptoms are actually the body's way of telling you that you need to make some changes. Before the stones developed, your kidneys were working hard to eliminate the unwanted sludge and build up, but started to lose the battle and so the stones developed.

Fortunately, the problem usually responds well to natural treatment and the intense kidney stone pain many people experience can be eliminated very quickly.

Some factors in kidney stone causes are:

1. Partial blockage of urinary tract

2. Genetics

3. Alcohol consumption

4. Low water intake

5. Kidney disease

6. High salt intake

7. High animal protein intake

If you have already had kidney stones, you are likely to have more if you don't make some lifestyle changes. By making positive changes you can help to heal your kidneys and bypass more serious problems in the future.

To the right is a picture of the urinary system: Kidneys are the dark red, bean shaped organs at the top and the bright green tubes are the ureters, the tubes leading down to the bladder.

*** Please Note *** The bright purple area is part of the female reproductive system - not a part of the urinary system.

The sharp kidney stone pain that some feel is usually the stone trying to pass through the ureters.
