Low White Blood Cell Count

A low white blood cell count can be due to many different reasons, including genetic abnormality.

However, the most common causes for low white blood cells are directly health related. When your health has been seriously compromised, your immune system may produce extra white blood cells to fight the invasion and this may cause an increase in white blood cell count for awhile.

However, after trying to fight negative health conditions and/or habits constantly, the white blood cell count can become low as health slowly deteriorates and the body cannot produce enough white blood cells to sustain an optimum level.

There are also some conditions that may cause a high white blood cell count such as leukemia (cancer of the blood).

A person with a very strong immune system will have no chronic disease or debilitating physical problems. No matter what disease or chronic condition is the problem, it cannot happen until the immune system is too weak to fight it off.

Even simple things like allergies means that the immune system is trying to fight off invaders and many times these invaders are foods that the body cannot process properly due to two things - poor diet and/or poor digestion.

A Direct Link Between Immunity & Digestion!

Thirty to forty percent percent of your immune system function arises from your digestive system, and constant poor diet is probably the single largest cause of a low white blood cell count, resulting in low immunity.

When things are in balance there is a symbiotic relationship between the good and bad bacteria in the digestive tract. The good bacteria produce vitamin K, which helps blood to clot, and some of the "B" vitamins. They also help to preserve a healthy lining of the gut by controlling the bad bacteria.

If your diet isn't adequate to maintain healthy flora, you can end up with an impaired gut lining and this lining can become permeable resulting in food allergies and sensitivities and chronic health problems resulting in weak immunity. Of course low immunity will mean a low white blood cell count, so once again, there is a reason to eat a healthy diet. Many people think they are eating healthy because they don't eat a lot of the food we call junk food such as hamburgers and french fries, but the truth of the matter is that most people need to put more whole foods, more raw foods and more fiber in their diet.

This optimizes digestion and enhances the good bacteria in the gut which are responsible for a large portion of our immune function. This is the best way to naturally counteract a low white blood cell count and boost the immune system.

However, when the immune system has been compromised, additional help may be needed to get your body back on track. The best way to balance your digestive good/bad bacteria ratio is to do a digestive system cleanse which can also relieve chronic digestion problems for many people. Many people have excess waste adhering to their colon walls due to inefficient digestion/poor diet so the colon itself is not healthy and cannot absorb nutrients as well as it should.

However, be aware that certain conditions can also cause poor digestion and a low white blood cell count, such as Candida Albicans (yeast infection). Candida interferes immensely with digestion and since it is an invader, the immune system tries to fight it but slowly loses ground causing the problems to get worse and worse.

So the combination of poor diet and a yeast infection turns into a double edged sword and the whole body is dragged down to such a low level that the person constantly has all kinds of symptoms and chronic health problems.

Some causes of a low white blood cell count include drug toxicity, vitamin/mineral deficiencies, blood diseases, diseases of the liver, tuberculosis and typhoid. Also, infections, constant inflammation and disorders of the bone marrow (where white & red blood cells are manufactured) will wear down the immune system causing a low white blood cell count. Destruction of white blood cells can occur as a result of antibodies attacking the cells or from drugs stimulating the immune system to attack the cells.

You are what you eat and some whole foods, for example, whole grains instead of white flour products and raw fruits and vegetables can work wonders for the digestive system and so, improve the immune system.

Preservatives & Junk Foods Lower Immunity

The chemical preservatives and lack of nutrition in processed foods and fast foods also play havoc with the immune system, since these chemicals interfere with digestion by killing off good bacteria and encouraging bad bacteria overgrowth. Thirty to forty percent of your immune system function is related to a proper intestinal bacteria balance.

Most sickness begins in the sensitive mucus layer of the digestive system because this layer of tissue is often abused and damaged from poor dietary habits. A person with a healthy digestive system does not get sick very often because they will not have a low white blood cell count.

A person with a weak immune system may also have constant fatigue and catch every "bug" that comes around. Constant sniffles, infections, colds, flu, etc. are a frustrating part of their life.

Also, concentrated, specialized herbs can help to boost your immune system and quickly get rid of colds, flu etc. by helping to naturally boost a low white blood cell count, but should be used in conjunction with a healthier lifestyle to make the changes permanent. If you keep on with the same habits, the improvement is only temporary.

Your immune system is a directly related to your level of health -- the two are directly related and cannot be treated as separate entities. They are a reflection of each other.
